Past Skin
April 6 – September 10, 2017
MoMA PS1
22-25 Jackson Avenue, Queens
Long Island City, NY 11101

Cui Jie will participate in the group exhibition “Past Skin” at MoMA PS1, New York, running from April 6 to September 10, 2017. In today’s technological environment, we can style, extend, and broadcast ourselves at will, projecting into digital realms that in turn shape us. The six artists in ”Past Skin” take up science historian and cyber-feminist Donna Haraway’s provocation, “Why should our body end at the skin?,” testing the growing porosity between our bodies and habitats in a contemporary world where virtuality is ubiquitous and surreality is increasingly normalized. As much as we exert influence on our bodies and surroundings, the technologies that enable this influence also influence us. Details »

What is the place of art in China today? Or rather, in a world where the underpinnings of the post-World War II consensus have come suddenly loose, a world whose most prosperous corners find themselves in thrall to sectarian populism, a world increasingly unable to deny the changes wrought to its ecosystem by the last hundred years of human emissions, and a world in which, despite it all, China continues to grow in output and influence, what is to be done?

CHENG RAN, "Crossroads", 2016, Light installation, Dimension variable

A Beautiful Disorder

July 3rd through November 6th, 2016
Grounds and Galleries, Cass Sculpture Foundation
Free with general entry

“A Beautiful Disorder” is the first major exhibition of newly commissioned outdoor sculpture by contemporary Greater Chinese artists to be shown in the UK.

The historical relationship between English and Chinese landscape aesthetics is the starting point and inspiration for these contemporary Chinese and Greater Chinese artists. The title of the exhibition, A Beautiful Disorder, is a quote from an influential letter written by the Jesuit missionary and artist Jean-Denis Attiret in 1743 that had a tremendous effect on English garden culture. Attiret used the term to describe the ability of the Chinese garden to provoke violent and often opposing sensations in the viewer through a series of theatrical framing devices. The exhibition invites the viewer to reflect on China’s past, present and future relationship with the world at large, and provides valuable insight into the state of Chinese culture, politics and society today from the perspective of some of its most dynamic and engaging artists.

Cui Jie

BIOGRAPHY

Inspired by Orson Welles’ multi-perspective, Cui Jie‘s (b. 1983 Shanghai, China) painting evolves from her previous expressionist take on absurdities in contemporary China to the mediation between China’s Urbanism and personal aesthetics. Inspired by Orson Welles’ multi-perspective, she applies various layers of images—some realistic, some imaginary—on canvas. Each layer comprises sculptural impastos and is meticulously executed to represent the transformation of China’s Urbanscape through time and politics. Executed with calculated and deadpan brushwork and a warm and affective palette, Cui’s landscapes and interiors make comparative studies of cities as distinctive model/laboratories of China’s open-and-reform, which also visualizes a personal history that is informed by the aesthetic madness in one time and place, for instance, the architectural confusion of Bauhaus, Chinese propaganda, Soviet communist aesthetics. In other words, Cui Jie’s painting is a time capsule that re-imagines the past and the present.

Cui Jie graduated from China Academy of Art. She has been included in Phaidon Press’s publication Vitamin P3 as one of the leading painters nowadays. Her works have been included in many exhibitions, among many others, the upcoming “Past Skin”, MoMA PS1, New York, 2017; “The New Normal: Art and China in 2017”, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2017; “Hack Space”, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Amira Gad, chi K11 art museum, Shanghai and K11 Art Foundation, Hong Kong, 2016; “A Beautiful Disorder”, CASS Sculpture Foundation, Chichester, 2016; “My Generation: Young Chinese Artists”, touring at Tampa Museum of Art and Oklahoma City Museum of Art, 2014; “1st CAFA·FUTURE: Sub-Phenomena”, curated by Xu Bing and Alexandra Munroe, CAFA Art Museum, Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, 2012; “Face”, Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, 2012; 4th Prague Biennale, 2009; “Poetic Realism: An Reinterpretation of Jiangnan – Contemporary Art from South China”, Centro de Arte Tomás y Valiente, Madrid, 2008; “Notes of Conception”, Iberia Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, 2008.

past | CUI JIE, LI SHURUI, ZHANG JUNGANG & LI JIE

Cui Jie, Bar, 2011, Oil on canvas, 100 x 130 cm

December 3rd 2011 through February 5th 2012

Artists: Cui Jie, Li Shurui, Zhang Jungang & Li Jie

“Cui Jie, Li Shurui, Zhang Jungang & Li Jie” features recent works by Beijing-based Cui Jie and Li Shurui and Harbin-based duo Zhang Jungang & Lijie, and gives a perceptive account of the relationship between their life and contemporary landscape.

Known for her early works that question the truth in reality through unlikely marriage of images on canvas (for instance, an astronaut walking in Forbidden City, or a group of beauty queens posing for photo shoot in the Moon), Cui Jie has steered her focus to the study of forms and figure-ground relationship by a body of new paintings that magnify architectural details. Inspired by the multiple exposures in Orson Welles’ films, Cui painted a world composed of fragments from urban landscape and, in a few cases, layers of grids, lines and other graphic patterns. Though set in Beijing, subjects in her landscape paintings look like elsewhere in any possible contemporary cities, representing a sense of déjà vu and alienation.
