news | CHEN WEI AND CHENG RAN IN DEGENERATION

December 22nd, 2013 to March 23rd, 2014
OCAT Shanghai, 1016 North Suzhou Road, Shanghai
Curator: Mariagrazia Costantino

Participating artists: Chen Wei, Cheng Ran, Chen Zhou, Guan Xiao, Hu Yun, Li Ming, Li Ran, Lu Yang, Ma Qiusha, Ye Linghan

Degeneration explores the concept of continuity and rupture in Contemporary Art, through the presentation of the most representative young artists working with different media in Mainland China.

There seems to be now a certain tension between the reluctance to move away from the legacy transmitted by the former generations and the objective necessity to break this thread: is precisely this the way a new generation arises.

What we would like to suggest or imagine is a possible scenario in which there is no more need to refer back to the formal authority of preceding generation, yet irreverent spirit can be maintained.

The word “Degeneration” implies several meanings. The literal one is “deviation from one’s own genus”, referring to a process that cannot be stopped, an altered status which makes impossible to go back to the starting point, or even to an intermediary one. Not necessarily utterly bad, this is a condition contemporary societies – including the Chinese one – are now confronted with. In this specific context, the other temporary meaning conferred on the word derives from its split into two separate parts – “de” and “generation”: the prefix “de” is used to indicate a process of privation, which in this case is that of this missing “generation.” As a process, “degeneration” embeds the symptom and the cure. past | CHENG RAN: ACOASM, LOGAGNOSIA, DYSLEXIA AND DYSGRAPHIA, THEY WERE DROWNED IN RIOT ALL NIGHT

CHENG RAN Studio at Rijksakademie OPEN 2013
November 30th through December 1st, 2013
Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam

In international language testing there are usually four standards by which proficiency is assessed: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Hence, these have become the rules to judge whether a certain person possesses the elementary ability to communicate with others and whether they have the capacity to live overseas. On top of this, they represent a certain kind of defining dimensionality to one’s personal identity, and through examination papers and data, they infer one’s personal ability to control and balance the emotional and the rational. In his one year of residence at Rijksakademie, Cheng Ran employed video installations, sounds and a novel as his creative media, to query these fake, emotionless standards and, from an opposing perspective, to attempt to re-discover the interaction between the primitive instincts of one’s human body and the social fabric in order to describe this state of mania with its corresponding physical disorders, possessing a rebellious personal identity and values. From this, the title is taken.

Leandro Erlich, "Changing Rooms", 2013. Photo by Justin Jin.

November 8th through 24th, 2013
Jing An Kerry Center, Atrium
1515 Nanjing Xi Lu, Jing’an District, Shanghai

Simply entitled Project Shanghai, the first solo project in China of internationally renowned artist Leandro Erlich comprises two large site-specific installations the artist has produced following his recent researches in Shanghai.

Leandro Erlich, born to an Argentine architecture family in 1973, is widely known for his intriguing optical illusions that allure his befuddled viewers to explore. His staged spaces can always turn the most assured situation upside down. With a single gesture to the architectural structure, Erlich transforms all sorts of everyday places into a baffling and deceptive visual maze, which challenge people’s common sense and further deliver an altered reality. The uncanny and sinister aesthetics of film directors Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski, Luis Buñel and David Lynch directly influence Erlich’s artistic rendering. While the fictional world of the Argentine writer Jorge Louis Borges is thoroughly absorbed into the artist’s imagination.

Ideas and experiences of “China” live across many borders. As routes of commerce and leisure between Chinese regions have become more open, artists have embraced mobility, traveling (or having multiple artistic bases) from Mainland China to Taiwan, Taiwan to Hong Kong or to Singapore, and other areas with large historical Chinese populations. Through works in video, photography, installation, sound and performance, this exhibition explores the pluralism of this Chinese identity, geographically and culturally.

Curated by Arthur Ou, an artist and Assistant Professor of Photography at Parsons, the exhibition features work by Chen Chieh-jen, Heman Chong, Cao Fei, Lee Kit, Michael Lin, Charwei Tsai, Hong-kai Wang, Ming Wong, Jun Yang, and Hu Yun.

Taking over both the gallery space and the Bund’s Le Space, the exhibition surveys the act of ‘reading’, exploring its role in history, in modern times as well as in present day. Throughout the development of mankind and human civilization, we have relied and depended on reading to gain, gather or communicate knowledge and information for all disciplines; for example, Chinese literati scholars required poetry to be shared through reading before it was considered a complete work, and reading became a means not only to express oneself but to understand others. Whether it be reading nature, reading the stars, reading technology, reading literature, reading performance, or reading art, the manner of reading has been vital not only for individuals, but for vital understanding of the people, objects, disciplines both closely and far away. Using this prompt, this exhibition displays the manifestations of reading in the selected artists’ practices, demonstrating the varieties of definitions and approaches to ‘Reading’.

fair | ART BASEL HONG KONG 2013

May 23th through 26th, 2013
Hall 1, Booth C56. Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center
1 Harbour Rd, Hong Kong

For its participation in the first edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, LEO XU PROJECTS premieres a new photography-based project by Beijing-based young artist Chen Wei.

This new project includes an ongoing series of photographs Chen Wei initiated three years ago on a research in the youth cultures—that related to the music and life-style in particular—in Mainland China.

Continuing his exploration in possibilities of photography by breathing in elements from other disciplines as theatre, cinema, still-life painting, etc, Chen Wei has been producing a new body of works that is set primarily in club dance-floor and locations of parties—places and activities have barely been the subjects of Contemporary Chinese art. Starting with photographing an unlikely moment or some theatrically charged occasions in such cultures, Chen has been furthering his study and work to reveal the internal world of young Chinese who grow through the post-89 decades, say, the 1990s and early 2000, and who lived upon the imported and pirate cultural products as their resource of art and recreation, for instance, pirate music cassettes, CDs, DVDs, illegally translated literature and art publications.
