Frieze New York
Randall’s Island, Manhattan.
May 14th through 17th, 2015
The third year exhibiting in Frieze New York, the gallery will be presenting a solo project by Shanghai-based young media artist aaajiao (internet alias of Xu Wenkai). It employs a set of artist’s sophisticated algorithm to study the human body and its physical operation and movement, by following the paths of both Chinese philosophy (and medical science) and the present Fractal Theory.
As a media artist pioneering the front of computer science and applications of computer programs, aaajiao has expanded his practice from disciplinary studies (overlooked histories of social media, the cultural implications of China’s Great Firewall, and the generational phenomenon of TV and computer obsession) to the new possibilities of visual representation through algorithm and programming, and furthermore to a deepened insight into uncharted aspects of human body and physicality. The booth will investigate the invisible physical operation of meridian system (in Chinese herbal medicine and philosophy). The artist incorporates the contemporary Fractal Theory and computer algorithm in his research to trace the energy channels and points within human body, transplanting this internal micro universe into tattoo patterns and gallery space.
